Life & family
He was inherited music by gene as his father Norman Menken was a boogie-woogie piano-playing dentist, also his mother Judith was an actress, dancer, and playwright. Menken primarily joined a premedical program at New York University but ultimately graduated with a degree in music.
Career of Disney Legend
Alan has been attended various music theatre workshops mentored by Lehman Engel. He began his career by performing in clubs, composing advertising jingles, and providing accompaniment for ballerinas at practice. He got his first break with the 1979 play God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater as a composer. The playwright Howard Ashman chose him and Engel. He & Ashman wrote their next musical, Little Shop of Horrors, for a cast of only 9 performers, including a puppeteer. The legendary composer has created some of the most beloved songs & musical scores of our time, capturing the attention of audiences worldwide, especially his tiny fans.
The scores for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas have each won him two Academy Awards. Menken and Ashman’s duo later created Beauty and the Beast which earned them three 1991 Oscar nominations for Best Song, winning for its title song. He is popularised as the only living person with the most number of Academy Awards i.e four each for Best Original Score and Best Original Song. He has the third most Oscars of all time.
