The Basic Concept Of Scale & Tonality In Music


Tonality is an organized musical composition of one central tone and the remaining other tones have a relationship with that root tone.

We must know the Scale (The tones of the Major and Minor scale ) in order to understand the Tonality.

The word scale is derived from the Latin word scala. A scale is a step-wise series of notes. It’s theoretically the eight consecutive notes (A B C D E F G A), that start at a particular note, then go up or down the keyboard, until get back to the same letter.  Scales were first found in the musical ideas of Ancient Greek. Later in the 16th century, in the West the scale dominate music-making. At this time Ionian is assumed as the major scale, whereas Aeonian is the natural minor scale. Tonality, in music, is the principle of organizing musical compositions around a central note. It signifies the specific system of relationships between notes, chords, and keys.

Semitone

A semitone is the distance between a node and its nearest one on a keyboard. It can also be named as half step. Here we know the pitch is the difference between two notes. So semitones can be explained in terms of pitch. Semitones are called the smallest interval in western music. In a 12-note approximately equally divided scale, any interval can be defined in terms of an appropriate number of semitones. They are a whole tone or major second is 2 semitones wide, a major third 4 semitones, and a perfect circle of fifth 7 semitones. The whole tone is just twice the size of a half-step/ semitone.

Accidental, in music is just the opposite concept of the term accident. An accident occurs unintentionally, whereas accidental in music is deliberate. It is a sign of music notation that increases or diminishes a natural note by one or two half steps. These are the special symbols that can be placed before the signature notes to raise or lower them, to create a difference. They are a note or pitch that is not part of the key signature.
