Cubase Music editing software a computer application, which allows editing and generating of audio data. A digital audio workstation (DAW) consists of software used for composing, producing, recording, mixing and editing music through MIDI.

Journey of Cubase

In 1989 the German company Steinberg, for the Atari ST computer developed a MIDI sequencing software , called Cubase. During last 31 years Cubase developed several times. As the first version was only introduced as a MIDI sequencer, which is designed for Atari Computer, later redesigned for Mac and Windows PC platforms. Later it worked with every MIDI hardware.

After first version Cubase has been upgraded tp Cubase VST, which was capable for audio recording & mixing. Then Cubase SX, this changed the software completely to a professional version in audio sequencing and editing. It include ‘UNDO’ audio editing first time. In 2004, Cubase SX3 include ‘CONTROL ROOM’, to help create monitor mixes, and a new set of VST3 plug-ins and instruments.

At early stage it worked as a MIDI sequencing software for the Atari ST computer. In 1993, after up gradation of Cubase, that version could record and play back up to 32 tracks of digital audio on an Apple Macintosh without the need of any external DSP hardware.It gives us a comprehensive set of editing tools, but the manner in which they can be used varies tremendously. But there is no fixed rule to follow. Music don’t follow rule.

With Steinberg’s Cubase 4 a new version of VST, VST3, was introduced. It generates automation & advanced audio output. Cubase 6 included VSTs like HALion Sonic SE, Groove Agent ONE, LoopMash 2 and VST Amp Rack.

Cubase LE supports up to 24 MIDI tracks, 16 audio tracks, and 8 physical inputs with recording quality up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Latest Cubase version is Elements 10.5. Cubase is never been free but those who are having Cubase Elements 10, Cubase Pro 10, Cubase Artist 10 are eligible for free up gradation.
