Enya is a famous Irish diva born in Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, on May 17th, 1969. She has four brothers and four sisters, some of them formed the band An Clann As Dobhar in 1968. She was the part of her family band Clannad, the band comprises of her siblings Máire, Pól, and Ciarán and twin uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan.
Enya developed her sound over the following four years with multi tracked vocals and keyboards with elements of new age, Celtic, classical, church, and folk music. She has sung almost in ten languages. The Frog Prince brought Enya to the limelight in 1984. She achieved a tremendous success in her career with the album Watermark, in 1988 which featured the hit song “Orinoco Flow”. It was her second album. It was features music in different styles, shows the versatility of the singer. Watermark was reissued in 1989, 1991, and 2009; This is a topped the charts in the United Kingdom, peaked at number 2 in Germany and the Watermark album sold eleven million copies.
Shepherd Moons was the #1 album on the Billboard 200 chart for 238 weeks, during which time Enya’s fans were captivated. Enya has topped the Top New Age Albums chart on 283 occasions over the past 16 years – approximately five and a half years. It has earned four Grammy Awards in that category. Enya’s music was dubbed New Age music by the Grammys.
She has re-created version of her own album called Enya was released as The Celts in 1992. Enya was her debut album, which was released in 1987. Afterwards, in 1995 Shepherd Moons she released The Memory of Trees. Her “Anywhere Is” and “On My Way Home” singles from the album reached the Top 10 in the U.S. and the UK, respectively.
In 2000, Enya released the album A Day Without Rain. It was reached top 2 in Billboard 200. The first single, “Only Time”, was used in the film Sweet November. It was also associated in commercial series Friends. It was top the Adult Contemporary and Adult Top 40 charts.
Amarantine is the name of the new album released in 2005. It reached the Top 10 in both the UK and the US, and also reached at number 3 in Germany. The album won the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album for 2007. After a long break from industry Enya returned in 2012 and released Dark Sky Island in 2015.
Enya has won awards including seven World Music Awards, four Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album, and an Ivor Novello Award. She was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for “May It Be”.
