How To Make Syncopation In Music
Introduction the term Syncopation
Syncopation in Music by definition is the amending or moving the normal accent, generally, it is caused due by stressing the normally unaccented beats. It is a temporary alteration of the regular metrical accent in music caused typically by stressing the weak beat. It’s the concept of playing rhythms that emphasize the offbeats. It shifts or displaces a normal rhythm by stressing beats generally not stressed.
These are all theoretical knowledge, definitions. But, we all who know music a little bit can aware of the term ‘Syncopation’. Somehow we can relate it with rhythm. We can find it especially in African-American music like jazz, blues, and hip-hop, and is widely popular today in all kinds of music. Also in eastern Europe, and its use in the Western written tradition may be traced to the 14th century. We can identify the music of Igor Stravinsky and other 20th-century composers. So, what we can say is ‘Syncopation’ can be found in most of the variety of music.
It instigates energy & excitement in music. Often beat needs to create spontaneity in straight music by playing with our expectations. This groove-bringing tactic breaks away from the strait rhythm when every note falls on the expected beat. Sudden change the pattern or stressing offbeats effects on music by adding variation, character, and groove to the music. It can break the repetition & boredom of music.
Types of Syncopation
The ‘Syncopation’ is mainly four types we found in music. i.e Suspension, Even-Note, Offbeat, and Missed Beat. In suspension, the weak beat gets more important than a strong one. For Even- Note the weak beats get for emphasis those are even number, i.e either 2/ 4. Offbeat syncopation is a complex technique by changing notes away from the constant pulse. It occurs when the stressed note falls between beats. There are two types of offbeat syncopation: beat-level and division-level.
When for a series of notes with a duration of one beat shift them early by half a beat that is beat-level syncopation. Division-level syncopation occurs when notes shift to subdivisions of the beat rather than a whole beat. Here the series of notes are having a duration of one division.
Missed Beat replaces a strong beat in a measure with a rest. It also emphasizes the weak beats rather than the strong beats.
Conclusion
Syncopation induces liveliness into all categories of music by adding variation, character, and groove to otherwise static rhythms. Rhythms become dull & mundane. Keeping rhythms confined to a straight pulse is a surefire way to make your music sound stale and robotic. Syncopation alone is sufficient to increase groove in simple melodies.
