Coloratura in music is a type of vocal ornamentation in classical type of music. It is characterized by rapid, playful passages that show off the singer’s vocal range and agility. This type of singing is often associated with the opera, where it is used to show off the dramatic range of the human voice. Coloratura is an elaborate melody with runs, trills, wide leaps, or similar virtuoso-like material, or a passage of such music. Operatic roles in which such music plays a prominent part, and singers of these roles, are also called coloratura. Its instrumental equivalent is ornamentation.
