The Art Of Interlude in Music

An interlude is a term used to describe a musical passage which serves as an interruption within the context of a larger piece. It is the opposite of an overture. The purpose of an interlude can be to create suspense or it may simply serve as a connecting bridge between sections of the piece, such as from one verse to another. Interludes are commonly used in operas and songs with multiple sections, but they can also be found in instrumental music, dance music and even some film music

Musicians often use interludes to join various parts of a song. Generally, interludes do not have a defined length, and some artists may use them to transition between one song and another on an album. While the term “interlude” in music has no universal definition, it has frequently been used by artists as a transitional piece.

Interludes are usually played between sections to allow the listener to rest, or they may be played while the scene changes on stage.
